A man was arrested by the U.S. Park Police Tuesday evening after allegedly defacing the Washington Monument, police officers confirmed.

The person used purple paint to vandalize the bottom of the monument and the landmark is briefly closed, officers stated. Conservators with the Nationwide Park Service will work on restoration, U.S. Park Police tweeted.
