Greg Abbott targets soft-on-crime attorneys who will not prosecute abortion legal guidelines

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) touted a brand new invoice that may goal "rogue" left-wing district attorneys who refuse to prosecute sure crimes.

In a tweet, Abbott referred to Home Invoice 17, which permits the removing of county or district attorneys in the event that they refuse to prosecute sure crimes. The invoice was enacted primarily out of concern of attorneys declining to implement legal guidelines relating to abortion restrictions, however it additionally comes amid a pattern of left-wing district attorneys refusing to prosecute different lower-level crimes akin to drug possession or theft.

"A brand new regulation I signed will assist reign in rogue district attorneys," Abbott tweeted. "Those that need to work in Texas regulation enforcement should uphold the legal guidelines and defend Texans. If not, they are going to be held accountable."

HB 17 permits petitioners to file a movement to dismiss a district or county legal professional if they're suspected of not implementing the regulation, at which level the legal professional in query would face a trial by jury. Public statements expressing refusal to implement the regulation are grounds for dismissal.

"A public declaration or announcement by a district legal professional or a county legal professional of an intent to ban the enforcement of any prison offense is prima facie proof of an adoption or implementation of a proper or acknowledged coverage for functions of this chapter," the invoice reads.
